The trilogy isn’t just about three stories being turned into films, these stories both have meaning and purpose. What caught my eye the most was a scene in Batman Begins where Bruce and Alfred are speaking on the plane, Bruce says â€Å"People meed dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I cants do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I am flesh an blood; I can be ignored or destroyed. But as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting† by being a symbol, batman is everlasting. And as a symbol its not about who you are, but the actions you make, its about what you have done and what you stand for in the end. Christopher Nolan uses Batman as that dramatic example you can change the world, all it takes one person and it truly can be anyone. In the trilogy, Bruce Wayne creates as well as becomes that symbol that Batman stands for. Christopher Nolan successfully made batman a symbol so that he cannot be incorruptible and with that his legacy continues to be everlasting. On top of that, as a symbol he isn’t seen by the people as a living person like you and me. Batman was created by Bruce Wayne not only to protect his identity but also to keep him with that super hero vision as being incorruptible but Bruce would not have been able to stop such evil as he did without Batman being an extension of himself. After watching the trilogy and seeing the final, the Dark Night Rises it reminds me of a quote by Ras Al Guhl saying â€Å"a vigilante is just a man lost in the scramble of his own glorification. He can be destroyed, or locked up. But if you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal and they cant stop you, then you become something else†. When Bruce Wayne was stuck in jail, being held back from helping the people this is when it shines through the most. He is more than just a man, he has the capability as well as strength to help the people with or without the mask on, it only influences he actions to become stinger. When Christopher himself says â€Å"batman is a marvelously complex character, somebody who has absolute charm and then, just like that can turn into ice-cold ruthlessness. There are few actors that can do that, and christian is one of them† by creating Batman’s symbolic identity, all of this was possible. Bruce having the ability to become the vigilante devoted to an idea, he becomes the â€Å"something else† that Ras Al Ghul speaks of. In Batmans perspective, being a symbol is not about who you are but about the actions you make. Its about what you have done and where you will ultimately stand in the end of the day. Bruce never reveals his identity as the Batman to the general public for a very clear reason, as he makes known to Gordon in the the Dark Night rises. Batman says, â€Å"its not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me. † his identity is never relieved because that would lead to corrupting the whole idea of Batman himself. Nolan keeps it this way to insure that Batman remains that symbol that everyone looks up too and he can continue to make a change and put meaning behind who he is. I completely agree with what Nolan says that â€Å"superheroes fill a gap in the pop culture psyche, similar to the roll of Greek Mythology. There isn’t really anything else that does the job in modern terms. For me, Batman is the one that can most clearly be taken seriously. Hes not from another planet, or filled with radioactive gunk. I mean, Superman is essentially a god, but Batman is more like Hercules; hes a human being, very flawed, and bridges the divided. By being human, he is then easy for us to relate too. It gets you thinking about the possibility of having a Batman in your own reality. Bruce Wayne is just a regular person like you and I, although Bruce has the advantage of having large amounts of money and the highly advanced gear he uses. But asides from that, he is just human like you and I. What thi s says to me is that anyone can take the action of being what he stands for, you or I could go out today and make that move, it only takes one to rise up and make that change. We all wake up in the morning wanting to live our lives the way we know we should. But we usually don’t, in small ways. Thats what makes a character like batman so fascinating. He plays out out conflicts on a much larger scale†. Nolan is staying that we deal with a lot of the same issues as Batman but on a much smaller scale. Bruce created Batman so he can move up on that scale; deal with the evil like no one has done before. Bruce becoming Batman as a symbol then moves into him being the Batman, but then ultimately forced to sacrifice the symbol and become Bruce Wayne again. This creates the purifying and rebirth of a new idea. Nolan does this so that Batman can always be around, he will last forever, and yet almost creating an opening for someone new to take over. In the Dark Night Rises right before Wayne sacrifices himself for Gotham he says to Gordon, â€Å"A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boys shoulders to let him know the world hasn’t ended. † this is Nolan’s last message to the audience, ending the story of Bruce Wayne, but the legacy of he has created will always remain. Anyone can be a hero, it just depends on how far you’re willing to go to do so. Pushing the boundaries is always hard in our reality, this is why Nolan created the symbol of Batman. The purpose of the symbol is not only what it represents, but for the meaning of that symbol to be incorruptible and everlasting without the flesh and blood of Bruce Wayne behind it. Nolan created the films in such a modern way that allows us to relate to the story very easily. Allowing the audience to gain the real life perspective of what Gotham City could be like. Our realities are sort of similar in a way, with all the talk of corruption and the conspiracies in the world you and I live in today. No one knows what to believe anymore, many of us live in constant fear just like many of the people of Gotham city. Batman being a human makes him relatable in so many ways, no powers, only gadgets, fighting and intelligence. The fact that hes not an actual super hero is the most important part. This just shows us that anything is possible all you have to do is push the limits. We are what we do, this is all our creation, and anyone can be the hero.
